2029 RB Makai Buchanan is already making a national name for himself. The Under Armour All-American out of Victor Valley High School (CA) checks in at 5’11, 180 pounds, and his love for the game started early. “I began playing football at the age of seven,” Buchanan said. “My passion for the game was inspired by my cousin, Marshawn Buchanan… Watching his success motivated me to fall in love with football and pursue the sport seriously from a young age.”

Development has been a priority for Buchanan, and he’s surrounded himself with coaches who demand excellence. “I currently train with four coaches, each of whom plays a significant role in my development,” he explained, pointing to longtime RB coach Philip Wash as a major influence who “consistently pushes me to improve every day.”

That work extends beyond the backfield. Buchanan credits his wide receiver and speed training for elevating his all-around game. “He helps elevate my game by putting me in real in-game situations,” Buchanan said of his receiver training, while noting that his speed coaches have helped improve “my speed, control, and overall performance with the ball.”

On the field in 2025, Buchanan set a clear standard for himself and believes he delivered. “My goal heading into last season was to play with a dominant mentality, take control on the field, and have a standout season,” he said. “I believe I successfully accomplished those goals.” Now his focus is locked on the future. “The 2026 season will showcase a new version of my game.”

Recruiting has followed his production in a big way. “I currently hold 30 offers” from national powers including Auburn, Georgia, Ohio State, USC, Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Miami, and UCLA, among others. “Each of these programs stands out in its own way, and I have great respect for all of them.”

Away from Friday Night Lights, Buchanan stays true to the grind. “I take pride in being a disciplined and dedicated individual,” he said. When he’s not training, he enjoys “watching and breaking down football film” and unwinding with video games like NCAA College Football, Madden 26, and NBA 2K.
