Standing at 6’3”, 215 pounds, 2028 linebacker Jay Schell looks every bit the part of a future Saturday star, but his journey started long before the bright lights. “I started playing football in the 4th grade… my dad played college football so that has always been my dream too. He introduced me to the game as far back as I can remember,” Schell said. From the beginning, football wasn’t just a sport—it was a calling.
That calling turned into commitment early. “I started lifting weights in the 7th grade… it was a competitive advantage because most kids don’t lift,” he explained. By middle school, Schell was already separating himself physically, then expanding his training to flexibility, speed, and quickness. Those habits laid the foundation for what would come next.
In January of his freshman year, Schell made a pivotal move, transferring to Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School to chase elite football and academics. “Rabun Gap is a boarding school so I live with my teammates August–May. We really push and challenge each other to get better,” he said. With 6AM offseason lifts and daily battles against top-tier competition, growth is non-negotiable. “Going against OL every day who have 30+ offers makes me better as an LB and forces me to go hard every day,” Schell added.
The results showed immediately. In his sophomore season and first year at Rabun Gap, Schell earned a starting role, led the team in tackles, and checked off major goals. “I started every game this season and led my team in tackles… I was All State and All Region this season at LB which were both my goals,” he said. Even falling just short of 100 tackles didn’t slow his confidence, especially with a defense that plays fast and together.
Now, the vision is even bigger. “Next year we want to win State and have a dominating defense,” Schell said. Individually, his sights are set high as well: “I want 120+ tackles my junior season and my goal is to be invited to play in the UA AA game or Navy AA game.” With nine defensive starters returning, Rabun Gap’s defense is poised to make serious noise in 2026.
College coaches have already taken notice. Schell currently holds 19 Division I offers, including Texas A&M, Georgia, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Auburn, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, NC State, Virginia Tech, and more. “I’m really grateful for all of the schools and coaches recruiting me… I hope to have a Top 10 this summer and probably commit the spring or summer before my senior season,” he shared.
Off the field, Schell is grounded in purpose. “My faith in Jesus is very important to me… I want to use that platform to encourage and influence others positively,” he said. Whether it’s golfing, fishing, or spending time with teammates, Jay Schell is built on discipline, faith, and relentless drive—and his story is only beginning.
